What is an MOT Test and Does my vehicle require one?

Originally called the Ministry of Transportation test, an MOT is a thorough annual examination of a vehicle that is three years old or more. The MOT tests both the safety of your vehicle and the level of emissions in the exhaust. The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) is responsible for 'licensing' both the MOT test station and the MOT tester. It is your responsibility to ensure that your vehicle is examined every 12 months. Without an MOT certificate, you will be unable to renew your road tax and your car may not be insured. Having a current MOT certificate is also a legal requirement in the UK. The assessment is based on the condition of the vehicle on the day. The Nominated Tester will seperately list and inform you of any 'advisory' items that have passed the test but will require attention in the future. You can have your vehicle MOT tested up to 28 days in advance of its due date.

Frequently Asked Questions on Mot-Station.com

Q. How soon can you book me in for my MOT?

We can often book you in straight away with your local MOT test centre, so if you're in a hurry, you can book for today, Just call us today if our online booking data isn't showing below.

Q. How long does it take to complete my MOT test?

The test typically takes around 45-60 minutes, however on occasion we may take slightly longer as want to ensure your vehicle is 100% road worthy and not just pass or fail it quickly. Please arrive around 10 minutes ahead of your appointment, if we can start ahead of your schedule time we will. You are welcome to wait, while your MOT test is complete but you can also leave your vehicle with us and we can give you a call once your MOT test has been completed.

Q. What types of vehicle do you MOT?

  • Cars and small vans (Class 4)
  • Class 7 Vehicles (vehicles in the 3.0 to 3.5 tonne weight range, including large vans, pickups and transits) However these can change please always give us a call to confirm.

Q. What's checked on my vehicle during its MOT?

The MOT test is designed to ensure that your vehicle meets road safety and environmental standards. You should be aware that the MOT certificate is not a guarantee of the general mechanical condition of your car - you should have your car serviced regularly to maintain its mechanical condition. Should your vehicle need a little help to pass the test, you can rest assured that almost all repairs can be carried out on site on the same day in most instances. Any repairs and charges will be notified to you upfront, so no nasty surprises, we won't start any repairs without your verbal or written consent.

Q. What can I do to make sure my car passes?

Many failures we see every day could be prevented by drivers carrying out some simple checks before bringing their vehicle in. Common avoidable faults include light bulbs, tyre condition and pressure, mirrors, wipers and washers.

Q. What documents do I need to bring?

If your vehicle is undergoing its first MOT then a V5C vehicle registration certificate (log book) is required, this document is also required if your vehicle has had a change of registration plate since its last MOT. In all other instances no documentation is required.

Q. What happens if my car fails?

If your car fails, it must be repaired and retested. You cannot legally drive your car on the road until the repairs have been made and a certificate issued. Most repairs can be carried out onsite at the test centre on the same day, and we will always advise you upfront about any work that needs to be done.

Q. Is there a charge for a retest?

If you choose to have your car repaired elsewhere, you can take it back to the original testing centre for a partial retest within 10 days of the initial test. If you bring your car back after 10 working days, you will be charged for a full MOT. An explanation of retest fees can be found on the DVSA's website: www.gov.uk/getting-an-mot/retests.

Q. What if I disagree with the decision?

If your vehicle fails and you wish to appeal against the decision you should ask the testing station for a complaint form. If your appeal is successful the fee or part of it will be returned, but you should not have your vehicle repaired before the appeal is considered as any change may affect the outcome of the appeal.
